How to clean your microwave naturally

Cleaning the microwave is one of those dreaded tasks. It can get really nasty, really fast.  Its usually dried on yuk and tough to get off without a heavy duty cleaner. There is something unsettling about cleaning the microwave with heavy chemicals. How much of that is getting absorbed back into the next thing you cook?  This is where our handy dandy vinegar comes in.

You will need the following:

  • A dirty microwave

  • 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar
  • 1 cup tap water
  • I x 2 cup capacity microwave safe dish

  • 1 set of heat resistant pads or gloves
  • Damp sponge

  • Pour vinegar and water into microwave safe bowl
  • Place the bowl in the middle of the microwave

  • Turn microwave on high for 5 minutes

  • Let rest in the microwave for an additional 2 minutes (this lets the steam do its thing in loosening up all the gunk)
  • Using heat resistant pads or gloves carefully remove dish from the microwave. This dish still contains boiling water so be careful when you are taking it out.
  • Remove the glass plate and the round turny thing under it. (Sorry don’t know what that is called)
  • Take your damp sponge and wipe out the inside of the microwave.
  • Wash the glass plate and the turny thing (officially a term now) dry and put back in the microwave

Look how clean and sparkly it is now. And the most important thing… chemicals in site and it took me less than 10 minutes. Win Win.

Breathing new life into leftover turkey

All you will need is:

Left over turkey
Left over green bean casserole
Left over mashed potatoes

Bake one round of the store bought pastry as directed on the packet.
Cut up turkey to bite size pieces. Place in the bottom of the baked pastry shell.
Cover turkey with green bean casserole.
Cover all of this with the left over mashed potatoes.
Bake in the oven for 45 mins at about 350.

It’s that easy. Just eyeball the amounts of each. This was amazing!

Banana cake with butter cream-cheese icing

Banana cake with butter cream-cheese icing. Filled with more fresh bananas, cream, cream-cheese. This was a super easy and fun recipe.

Banana yellow cake

1 Cup Of Butter
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar.
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
4 or 5 room temperature eggs
2 1/2 cups plain flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 Cup whole milk
4 over ripe bananas mashed

Preheat the oven 350 degrees.
Butter and flour two 9 inch pans don’t skip this step and use a spray. They won’t come out as easy.

Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add eggs one by one beating in well each time. I like to use 5 eggs because I think it gives it a richer flavor but 4 would work fine.
Mix together dry ingredients in a separate bowl.
Beat flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture alternating between the two, starting and ending with the flour.
Using a spatula gently fold in the mashed bananas.

Bake for about 22 – 25 minutes.

Turn cakes out onto rack to cool.

Once cake is completely cooled then you can move on.

8oz creamcheese
1/2 cup cream
1 Cup icing sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 ripe bananas sliced into small pieces. Almost diced.

Beat creamcheese and cream together. Be careful to beat this well.
Add icing sugar and beat until well blended.
Beat in vanilla extract.
Fold in the bananas.
Spread on the bottom cake evenly and place second layer of cake on top.

Butter creamcheese icing.

8oz creamcheese at room temperature
1/2 cup butter at room temperature.
1 Cup icing sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Cream creamcheese and butter together until well blended.
Beat in icing sugar
Beat in vanilla extract

Spread evenly on top layer and you’re done.

Cakes can be kept for two days before you assemble them as long as they are well sealed. Three days after you add icing and filling.

Hello world!

Welcome to SewSewable! This is my very first post on the blog. I thought I would start with telling you a bit about myself and what I want to accomplish here.

My greatest passions are sewing and cooking or basically anything crafty. As it turns out, I have quite the knack for these things. When I was raising my children I would see something that I couldn’t afford but I wanted, so I would figure out how to make it myself. When it came to cooking I had a real appreciation of the flavors and how they worked together and strove to make things from scratch. The world I grew up in was primarily concerned with keeping up with all the advancements that were being made with modern life. As a result I feel the world lost something in the translation.  We were moving so fast that there wasn’t time to teach my generation the ways of the past and to be honest not much interest was shown in it. 30 years later we are finally starting to realize that maybe using all that prepackaged food is not so good for us. We are finally starting to stop and ask, wait, what chemical is that and what does that do exactly?  We are educating ourselves (thanks to technology) about everything, which is leading us down a very different path. Now we realize that we may not be able to trust what the so called experts have to say. I found myself thinking, there were very few people overweight in generations gone by. Why now, when we are supposed to be so advanced, are people putting on so much extra weight. I came to the conclusion that it had to have something to do with the chemicals they were adding to either the prepackaged food or the animals themselves.

My goal here is to share what I have learnt over years with those who want to learn about it. Please take advantage of the free recipes, patterns and tips. Let me know if you would like to see something that is not here.  Contact us
